Saw the film yesterday at my local Alamo Drafthouse. I didn’t dig it. However, I respect the artistry of the film and that the filmmaker was making something original. Also, thank you Dan for your spoiler including what the film is an allegory to. It gave me some further insight into the film.

Loving the Non-Spoiler/Spoiler format. Even though I want to give this movie a shot, I went ahead and watched the spoiler section, and I'm glad I did. I can't wait to see this movie, and I hope I can get a chance to see it in theaters

Finally saw Sting yesterday, and found it underwhelming. The acting in this movie is really really bad. The guy that plays the exterminator is the only decent actor. That said, the cgi is alright

I like the split non-spoiler/spoiler format. I feel like a lot of times there are only spoiler discussions for the big blockbuster movies and I like having that for a wider variety of films. You can’t truly express how you feel about a movie unless you can talk about it in detail.

I can't help but to think Disney forced their ideas into this film... Great story potential lost for me.

I like what you said about movies and bonds. And as a queer kid of the 90s, this is one of the strongest bonds I've ever felt to a film. Planning to see it again almost immediately.

As one of your queer fans for many years now (who also uses neutral pronouns) it means the world to feel seen, appreciated, and respected by not only your inclusive language but how certain and steadfast you are in treating LGBTQ people with respect and dignity. It'd be so easy for a mainstream pop culture channel like this let stories like I Saw the TV Glow slip by unannounced or, if discussed, from an entirely bewildered and unresearched/heteronormative lens. You going the extra mile to treat Jane Schoenbrun and their film with the respect they deserve is what sets you apart from the other critics, and why you'll always have a following of queer movie lovers who can't wait for the next charts episode. You’re so right that SPOILER The film would have been so much better if the entire thing was about Bee reuniting IFs with their adults.

I feel like this could have been great if the first hour wasn’t so uneven. The final act brought it home pretty well though imo.

My biggest road block of this film is Justice Smith. I just can’t get into his acting. He always takes me out of all his movies.

thank you for covering this! I Saw the TV Glow and Longlegs are the movies i am most excited for this summer. neither one is likely to play near me (it's a road trip to get to the closest place playing I Saw The TV Glow), so i am looking forward to the streaming releases.

I LOVE the title of this movie! However, I knew before I even knew what this movie was about, that it wasn’t “good”! Actually,after watching this review,I still DON’T know what it’s about. (no fault of Dan’s!). I have a heart and a soul. And that part of me is constantly seeking nourishment. It’s seeking affirmation that I am a small part of something larger than myself,something lovely called humanity! Movies like this are so dark,so depressing and SO BROKEN. The characters are broken,from broken circumstances,trying broken avenues of escape that I,who is also a human being,knows doesn’t work! Even the ‘rays of light’ they frame as hope seem dark. And if I as a viewer don’t agree with the conclusions drawn by these characters walking these broken paths, then I feel like I’m labeled as a hater! Which is fine. But there is a way,and a path to the light,and if we’re not talking about that,in film or elsewhere,then what are we even talking about?! Don’t throw a bunch of brokenness and darkness at me,and then tell me that it’s a lighted pathway taking us in a positive direction.

I just watched I agree it's fine but at the same time it was clearly a film for children and wasn't meant for me which is koo but because it is a film aimed at children I do think they should have had more fun sequences to keep them entertained cos I could tell children in cinema were bored at points l and all the people just moaning saying ripped off fosters home stop saying things that are similar are ripoffs see it as inspiration or a different take on a similar subject

I would just kept the girl and paul rudd with the original team.Placing a mum in this movie is like power rangers asking their mum to join them as rangers.No teens would want their mum or dad to be in a team meant to be cool for teens or tbh wants nothing to do with their parents.

Many thanks for this highly informative, comprehensive and sophisticated analysis. Others have noted that revealing the Judy/Madeleine con early on helps justify Judy's willingness (albeit, reluctantly) to go along with her "transformation." But I would suggest even more importantly is that her decision to tear up the letter and try to salvage a relationship with Scottie begins the process of shifting the viewer's sympathy away from Scottie (who becomes increasingly more antagonistic) and more towards Judy. We need that added time to get to like Judy (after being unsympathetic knowing she was quite the willing participant in the original "con") in order to appreciate the tragedy of her death. Without those extra minutes, there's the risk of the viewer reacting along the lines of, "well, she got what she deserved."

This was a good but not great film. The ideas were great but I don’t think it made the most of them. Drop Dead Fred still the best Imaginary Friend film.

The film should be able to convey the message and theme of the film without prior knowledge of the artist behind it.

I knew nothing about this movie or the director so I went in totally blind. Leaving the theatre i felt sad and couldn't pinpoint why. The way I watched it, I thought it was trying to say something about our relationship to nostalgia and using TV/movies as escapism. But having watched this review I think I need to see it again and look at knowing the directors POV. But there's something to be said that even tho I didnt initially see it through a trans lens, the fact that I still felt it is incredible work on the directors part.

Honestly, I watched it to see Bill Burr. Was meh, not as terrible, sure dated but ok.

Any movie should be complete by itself. You shouldn't have to know who the director is or where they are coming coming from. If you have to do research about the people making the movie, the movie has failed.

I appreciate your always careful and detailed commentary about movies an awful lot, and that only makes me ashamed about how big of a factor your dad jokes at the beginning of reviews are in me impatiently clicking on each video 😂

IF..... only this was a good movie . We just watched it and honesty we were just bored for the most part.

Fun fact: one of the lead kids on the original Are You Afraid of the Dark show on Nickelodeon later created and starred as the gay preacher on Letterkenny.

Your "back corner" movies is my indie theatre :) I'm lucky in that we have a couple of indie movie theatres that are always playing fun stuff like this. Great review.
